The buzz: After selling off the popular Baan Suan Dinpaow, celeb choreographer of Academy Fantasia, Khru Ped, is at it again opening up another joint venture with her sister, restaurateur Khun Lek. Located at the latest hot spot, Vaness Venue, the two sisters aren’t just the landlords but the masterminds behind bringing some class to Pracha-Uthit. The restaurant is handily situated, right next to Khru Ped’s studio, La Danse, so you can work up an appetite with some dance moves before sitting down for a meal.
The décor: It’s a simple room that mirrors the simple personal tastes of the sisters: high white couches, woven chairs and an antique-style cupboard looking out onto an alfresco area. This deck surrounds a tiny pond and offers a relaxing vibe and a direct view of Khru Ped’s dance studio. If it gets too hot outdoors, you can always cool off in the pool in front of the studio.
The cuisine: Thai and Laos cuisine. They certainly keep it in the family with the staff from Baan Suan coming with them to the new venture: Khun Lek’s husband is the cook and close family friends manage the place. The main focus is somtam and the must-try is the somtam mitrapap, a mixture of Thai and Laos styles, which means a whole lot of plaa raa. Or you can try the somtam which comes with crispy pork and substitutes green beans for papaya. The beans add a pungent flavor but don’t impinge on the spiciness of the dish. As an alternative to somtam opt for the curries such as the creamy kaeng kua hoy kom and every vegetarian’s favorite, kaeng phak waan.
The crowd: Residents of the area, media and ad execs, actors, and friends of the celeb.
