Compared to the wide array of value-for-money, all-you-can-eat places scattered around Bangkok, Kampai Yakiniku is one of the weaker options. But, thanks to its convenient location in Siam Square, where it doesn’t have any competitors, Kampai becomes a decent choice if you want to stretch your baht that bit further after a shopping spree. Located on the second floor of O-Ho Katsu, this is a tiny joint with only seven tables—all equipped with a tabletop grill. During lunch time, there are set menus on offer, but most come to Kampai with only one intention: to gorge themselves on the all-you-can-eat yakiniku buffet. The deal is simple. Pay B399 net, and you have two hours to feast on all the beef, pork, chicken, squid, fish, shrimp, bacon and veggies you can cope with. Garlic rice, kimchi fried rice, salad, miso soup, gyozas and Coke are also included in the price. Sounds like a tempting bargain, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, it’s more about quantity than quality here. The selection may be vast, but the execution is sloppy. The garlic rice is dull and bland while the kimchi rice arrives dry and cold. The gyozas fare better, but we could do with thinner dough. The quality of the grilled items also disappoints. The seafood has obviously spent too long away from the sea and, on our recent visit, the fish was frozen inside. As for the meat, the chicken and pork are OK at best. There are three cuts of beef available—fatty brisket, lean ribs and marbled sirloin—and we appreciate that, but then again, it would be better if the thinly-sliced meat wasn’t also partly frozen. And despite the brochures and the menu promising that you won’t leave Kampai with smelly hair, you will. The ventilation system is not that efficient. The service is sluggish during peak hours but the servers always refill your glass with a smile. The final verdict? If you’re looking for a convenient all-you-can-eat restaurant and can settle for so-so ingredients, Kampai is an adequate option. Otherwise, there are plenty of buffet places that offer better for the same price. No corkage.
