A white traditional Thai house has been renovated and reborn as Maruchet, a restaurant serving Thai and Chinese fare. Maruchet, which means “angel’s conquest,” is located next to Klong San Saeb on a three-rai plot blessed with huge, decades-old trees. The concept is food from a bygone era, and the atmosphere, at least outside, is like traveling back in time 50 or 60 years. The trees provide shade during the day, and at night they stand guard as you enjoy a fine dinner by twilight. The atmosphere is lovely, though mosquitoes can be a pain. Inside, the décor is far less traditional, and the huge house can seat 200. Don’t expect much in the way of presentation here, but the food tastes great. The most famous items here are Chinese, not Thai. People come for tasty dim sum such as har gau, shao mai and barbecued pork bun. Raat naa sea food (noodles topped with light gravy and seafood) is also a good choice. Popular Thai dishes include talay non kuan (seafood topped with seafood sauce and served with noodles) and Yam Maruchet (spicy seafood salad). Be sure to check out the long dessert list, filled with all of your favorites at very reasonable prices. Try bua lawy pheuak (sweet taro dumpling) and thap thim krawp (red dyed chunks of chestnut in coconut milk).
Though it's not normally open during lunch hours, if you reserve for a group, they'll gladly host you.
