Mes Amis is clearly not for people like us, people who baulk at paying over B250 for a simple (and distinctly unappetizing) Chinese-style fried-rice. It’s more for people with deep pockets, who don’t know any better: perhaps short term residents of the serviced apartments whose ground floor it inhabits. Sure, the service is excellent, friendly and efficient, but then it should be when the army of servers only has two occupied tables to wait on, as on our last visit. The venue itself is also pleasant and flooded with light thanks to the floor to ceiling glass, but the purple velvet seating doesn’t help lift the mood beyond blah. The real stumbling block is the food though. If we’re being generous then maybe the kitchen simply has too much on its plate. After all, the menu offers breakfast, a full range of international and Thai dishes and a comprehensive Chinese selection. Unfortunately, apart from the worryingly fast speed at which these dishes arrive, none really seem to be their specialty. For example, the crab cakes with wasabi appetizer were extra deep fried, giving them an armor-plated coating and making the crab dry and tasteless. The tuna tartare is so spicy it’s difficult to finish, even if the garlic bread is spot on. Mains are just as hit and miss, the recommended lasagna is a lump of molten cheese with flecks of beef, while the baked rice with pork and Chinese black olives is bland and dry. The crab salad is better but still very expensive. Desserts like red berry crumble are equally disappointing: just a goo of fruit with some dry crumbs spooned on top. At least the ice cream and coffee are decent but then they come from Movenpick and Illy so it hardly counts. On a street that is chock full of restaurants, we’d say Mes Amis is an expensive and disappointing place to make friends with. No corkage.
