My Place @ Thonglor has potential, yet it doesn’t quite live up to expectations. Similar to its sister restaurant My Place by Homemade on Rama 6 Rd., My Place @ Thonglor boosts your mood and appetite with its pleasant interior. The dining area at one end and a cake display at the other frame the reception area, showing photos of celebrities who have visited. The dining space, boasting chandeliers and brown-and-yellow striped walls, is chic and homey, and office workers and university students usually occupy the roomy tables and comfy upholstered chairs. Weather permitting, an al fresco table is another nice seating option. With this being Thonglor, sitting outside also gives you ideal people-watching opportunities, and who knows—you might be rubbing shoulders with the rich and the famous. Unfortunately, the food is no match for the décor: The menu includes a wide selection of homemade western dishes whipped up to suit the Thai palate. Although food is being served on big plates, portions are relatively small considering the prices you pay. Dieters would go crazy over My Place @ Thonglor, since everything is created with health in mind, but gourmets will probably be disappointed with the unremarkable dishes that lack original, rich flavors. Our baked spinach with cheese was watery and tasted only faintly of cheese. The deep-fried soft shell crab with fettucini alfredo was a bit better thanks to its al dente pasta, yet way too overpriced. The saving graces of My Place @ Thonglor are its light meals and fusion recipes. Rocket salad with Parma ham emphasized the beauty of simple food. With only three ingredients—rocket, Parma ham and balsamic vinaigrette—the starter managed to be fresh and refreshing. Another enjoyable dish was spicy spaghetti bacon. The pasta was firm to the teeth, while sweet basil leaves added a welcome Thai note to the dish. After the meal, you can choose your favorite cakes from the display, though the restaurant’s healthy motif robs the desserts of their ability to satisfy any sweet tooth. Even the recommended iced-tea cake and Oreo cheesecake, despite their pricier tags, weren’t any different from those sold at weekend markets. We came prepared to be wowed, but nothing, even its pleasant setting, made us go “ooh” or “ahh.” All in all, My Place @ Thonglor is not terribly bad. It’s just that the eatery is not terribly good either.
