The place: This tiny chicken mara (bitter gourd) noodles shack in a sub soi of Thaniya starts feeding hungry lunchers from 2:30pm onwards, and is completely sold out by 5pm. (Mr. Harn’s legendary melt-in-the-mouth stewed chicken feet are usually the first to go). The perfect time to visit is between 3-4pm otherwise you’ll miss all the shop’s goodies and end up with run-of-the-mill noodles and shreds of chicken meat.
The selection: It’s all about the chicken bitter gourd noodles; add stewed chicken feet for just B5 extra. Or if that doesn’t satisfy your foot fetish, go for the stewed chicken feet soup.
Must-haves: We recommend the dry chicken noodles (you’ll get a bowl of bitter gourd and coagulated pig’s blood soup on the side). If bones and blood give you the creeps, the rich chicken stock is enough to please. Easy with the chili, though. The prik galiang definitely gives the normal dried ground chili a run for its money. Can’t decide? Order the special bowl which includes everything from chicken feet, eggs, chewy chicken skin, Chinese mushroom and bitter gourd. Again, you’ll need to get there early to enjoy this treat.
