What do you expect from a British café? All-day breakfast? Baked beans? Black pudding? Oh My Cod delivers on all counts as long as you are happy to lower your taste levels. Thanks to its location tucked in the less-trodden Rambuttri Village Inn compound, this orange open-air dining room is pleasant and more tranquil than the eateries lining the bustling main soi—not a pretty place but decent enough. Most of the tables are occupied by beer-sipping backpackers who are getting a break from Thai food. Much of the food is frank and filling with Yankee recipes such as burgers and hot dogs thrown in, along with a handful of Thai farang-friendly single dishes like chicken with cashew nuts, pad kraphao, or stir-fried mixed veggies and omelet served over rice. But who wants poorly executed American or Thai food in a British joint? It’s the fish and chips, you’re here for, right? The already hearty Cod and Chips, served with chunky fries, should calm your hunger. But you can also try the oven-baked jacket potato with local toppings like chicken green curry and kraphao. Yes, it’s adventurous. No, it’s not a good idea. Stick to the traditional items like black pudding, baked beans and bangers and mash. Not that any of this blew us away—except perhaps for the OMC Hangover Special, which gets you a fried egg, sausage, streaky bacon, beans, fried tomato, fried bread, toast, coffee/Lipton tea and a Bloody Mary. Is Oh My Cod worth the trip (particularly if you’re hungover)? Maybe not, but if you’re already stumbling about in the neighborhood and craving big-portioned comfort food, give it a shot. Besides, how many places in town have the fine Scottish specialty, deep-fried Mars bars?
