The buzz: Here’s another welcome excuse to kick back on the riverside, with the opening of Sheepshank, a new restaurant run by Chef Somkiat “Joke” Pairojmahakij of Seven Spoons. As such, you can expect a similar focus on fresh, organic produce. Keep an eye out nearby, too, as they’re planning on opening another small eatery with an emphasis on sandwiches.
The décor: Set in what was once an old boatyard right by Phra Arthit Pier, you can still see remnants of this former life, in the form of the old pulleys, crates and buoys that adorn a dining area that’s been polished up in an industrial style. Seat yourself in the air-con dining room as the outdoor space is still under construction.
The food: Modern American comfort dishes served with fine presentation. Dishes like bruschetta with roasted capsicum, jamon ham and anchovies (B200) and grilled vegetable salad with goat cheese (B220) offer a refreshing start, while mains include the usual suspects like pasta and meaty dishes. One thing Chef Joke is keen on is spices, as you’ll spot in the vegetable tagine with almond chickpea couscous (B280). Other specialties include the conchiglie pasta with hand-caught crab and lobster oil (B320) or the slow-cooked octopus and creamed corn risotto (B420).
The drinks: Classic cocktails start from B240-B280. They also serve a decent selection of wines (from B1,100 a bottle), as well as Italian craft beer Birra Menabrea (B700). Those with simpler tastes can opt for Singha, Heineken and Beerlao Dark.
The crowds: Acquaintances of the partners and fans of Seven Spoons who have caught wind of the new opening.
