Sweet Pista, which has moved to Green Connect in Soi Sawasdee, makes for a perfect hideaway from the frenzy of the city. Though the place is smaller than the previous address (only about 20 seats), it still draws plenty of hungry diners even on ordinary weeknights. They come for the homey ambience-natural wood windows, hanging bicycles —which makes one feel comfortable and surrounded by friends.
It’s also one of the rare venues in this increasingly upscale neighborhood that offers everyday favorites at cheap prices instead of overpriced “café” fare and fine dining. There’s much to love on the menu, like the onion rings (B85), Finger Lickin’ Spare Ribs (B150) and even the simple-but-delicious cheeseburger (B220). The onion rings are pretty unique as they are served with a salad with Japanese dressing—and this is where we need to caveat the fact that Sweet Pista is localized inter food, not some attempt at any kind of authenticity. In fact, a dish like the Dog Rice (rice with minced fried pork with fried egg, B100) which is a veritable bastard from who knows where. But the simple, salty, crispy pleasure makes it a must-order every time we stop by.
Chunky and generous, the ribs are equally pleasing, as is the cheeseburger, whose fragrant cheese and homemade bun are just spot-on. Of course, the pasta is localized, too, and not always that good. The spaghetti bolognese (B180) is pretty sweet while the self-confessed crossover spaghetti pla salid (B180) has a bland, salty taste and is really dry.
Pastas aside, we do love the cakes, which are made daily: choose from coconut, tiramisu, apple crumble, orange fresh cream, banoffee or lemon cheesecake (starts at B110). With prices from another era, and that good ol’ Thai taste, this diner is a good spot for a relaxing meal after a tough day at work.
