The buzz: The latest venture by the folks behind a number of restaurants and spas around the Khao San area, The Fabulous is going for something a little different. A place for coffee, desserts as well as a long list of signature cocktails, it’s a retro café, nighttime lounge and private party venue all rolled into one.
The décor: As ardent fans of all things yesteryear, the owners have used the existing fittings of this warm space—it used to be the former flagship store of It’s Happened to Be a Closet—and given them a vintage flourish. That means an entire wall of black and white photos of The Beatles, old television and radio sets and a lovely plaid couch. Best of all is that, save the seating area by the entrance, every table is off in its own little nook, giving a feeling of privacy and coziness.
The food: Because these guys also own prominent Khao San landmark, Tom Yum Koong, the idea is for you to get dinner there, and come by The Fabulous for dessert and drinks. They do homemade desserts like tiramisu, crepe suzette and the Fabulous Toast (a more decadent version of French toast), among other chocolate-inspired options.
The drinks: White coffee/tea menu in the daytime offers Twinning’s teas and Illy coffees. The black menu at night lists their drinks, which include the usual booze on one side (vodka, tequila, gin, rum, etc) and signature cocktails, the most popular of which is the girly Strawberry Swing (vodka and Cointreau). Oh, and students, they do card, so bring ID.
The crowd: Lots of college/high school students, enjoying the free wifi and studying diligently (yeah, right!), and tourists cooling their heels and sending mass emails. Nighttime sees lots of young diners coming for the extended, laid-back evenings of jazz and bossa nova.
