The buzz: The emergence of a new indoor somtam restaurant is always cause for celebration. This year, we’ve had openings like Kai Yang Sua Yai and Tor Um Tum, both of which aim to transport street flavors into more convenient and comfy spaces. Situated on the happening Sukhumvit Soi 33, Z Cafe draws customers in with its dimly-lit industrial interior and affordable prices.
The décor: The design of the two-story shophouse ticks most of the recent Bangkok décor trends with filament bulbs, exposed water pipes and raw brick. Colorful furniture and small plants add a bit of light relief to the place.
The food: You can expect all the usual Isaan suspects, from somtam poo plara (papaya salad with freshwater crab and fermented fish, B60) to deep-fried chicken wings (B110). But what probably makes it worth a visit is the healthy and soothing jim joom (Isaan hot pot, B210). Many people are already flocking here for the buffet—B319, including beef, pork and chicken (or you can add B80 for the seafood). There are also a few classic Thai dishes plus popular fusion options like spaghetti pla duk foo (spaghetti with deep-fried catfish, B120), pad pak bung kapi (stir-fried morning glory with shrimp paste, B100) and gung pad prik khee nu (stir-fried shrimps with chilies, B120). Those working in the area can also take advantage of the lunch sets, priced from B120-B180.
The drinks: There’s a brief cocktail list which includes recommendations like Ginda (white wine, strawberry, green apple, kiwi and orange) and Electric Passion (gin, lime juice and passion fruit) or you can opt for a glass of white sangria (B220). Beers are Asahi, Singha and Heineken (B60).
The crowds: Hordes of young professionals and groups of women from advertising agencies hanging out after work.
