The buzz: Tucked behind Emporium/ Benjasiri Park, Zorse is run by an architecture professor, Dr. Preechaya Sittipunt, who goes for a cozy, mix-and-match vibe through retro furniture sourced from places like Casa Pagoda and Chatuchak. Food is in the hands of Thai Chef Peerasut Nilawat, who worked at Long Table and here serves up contemporary fusion dishes.
The decor: The place was designed by the owner and bears all sorts of symbolic reminders of its name, Zorse (a cross between a zebra and a horse), from zebra-print cushions, lots of white, black and brown to stripe-evoking wood slats. Outside there’s a nice, welcoming patio with plants and a real-size wood horse that looks out onto the quiet soi. Inside is an airy, high-ceiling dining room with an open kitchen that’s decked out with paintings and an array of knick-knacks.
The food: The focus is on international comfort dishes, here, and they don’t mind you ordering off the menu, either. Light bites include the likes of Vietnamese fresh spring rolls with spicy dressing (B130), while mains span slowbraised beef cheek with potato and bacon croquette (B460) or fried rice with green curry, shrimp and squid (B210). Brunch dishes are served from 7am, ranging from baked items like baguette (B40), ciabatta (B45) and Maison Jean Philippe croissants (B70) to dishes like scrambled eggs on sour dough toast with smoked salmon and rocket (B230) and khao tom kung (boiled rice with shrimp, B130).
The drinks: Coffee starts from B60 or you can refresh with the Honey Lemon Heaven (Thai tea, honey, lemon peel, passion fruit and lime, B90) or Gold (Mango, banana, tropical juice, honey and yoghurt, B120). There is also a small cocktail list, which features the likes of Tamarind Kiss (vodka, tamarind, mint and icing sugar, B270) and rum tea punch (B270). Local beers start from B95 and wine by the glass from B270.
The crowd: Jogging neighbors, families and couples from the area or expats dropping by to make the most of the free Wi-Fi.
