Contemporary Culture and the Urban Landscape
In response to the impact of modern industrialization and changes in the social, political and economic environment, urban evolution and future development have become important areas for observation in urban studies. Included within are explorations of the city as a physical environment and as a new mode of living, which touches broadly on observations of the current state and future outlook of the city and its architecture; cultural landscapes and site histories; as well as for urban environment and social relationships.
The city is a vehicle for human living. It is the site where social activities occur. The so called urban landscape is no longer limited to the appearance of brick and mortar architecture, but includes the people who reside within. Every strand of the urban fabric is a reflection of its residents’ visions of living and social means. This is what gives rise to unique urban cultures and characteristics. Today, as we confront issues of globalization, discussions of the “subjectivity” of urban culture must be germinate from a retrospective of its historical roots rather than stagnating in the visual impressions comprised of a city’s architecture. How does the progression of urban development deeply reflect human existence and social relationships?
The Spring Project@MOCA Taipei lecture series hopes to bring together experts and scholars from different fields. In addition to establishing a platform for international exchange, we also hope that the process of discussion will bring the audience a different perspective and angle for contemplation. This lecture series hopes to explore issues of urban development under contemporary social environments from a variety of angles. To this end, urban and architectural studies experts Ching-Yueh ROAN, Jia-Hao WANG, and Aric CHEN; curators, Jiun-Shyan LEEMa-Li WU, Ping LIN, Sean C.S. HU and Po-Wei WANG; as well as visual artists includingWei-Li YEH, Lulu Shur-Tzy HOU, Rahic Talif,  Wei-Cheng TU, Tsan-Cheng WU, and Shang-Lin WU, have all been invited to participate in the discussion.

Topic: Cultural Homeland Artistic Practice
Moderator: Ping LIN(Curator and Professor at Tunghai University Department of Fine Arts)
Panelists: Jiun-Shyan LEE(Artist, Art Critic), Rahic Talif (Artist)
Discussion Topic:
In the era of globalized urbanity, artists Rahic Talif and Jiun-shyan LEE are strongly compelled by their homeland cultures to engage in public participatory work with community influence, that reveal the unique value of localized artistic practice. Taiwan’s cultural context and the distant traces of Austronesian history are explored from the culturally identity of Ami and Takau respectively, and from the geographical starting points of Eastern and Southern Taiwan. Rahic Talif’s “Action Project for Typhoon” is an exploration of ethnic migration, geopolitics, and collective nostalgia through found coastal objects; Jiun-shyan LEE’s “Formosa Wall Painting Group” emerges from the studio and into the community in an active “pairing off” that demonstrates the artists’ intent to re-enter the community. Language precedes being – how will these two artists navigate within the contemporary urban context the linguistic consciousness that has been lost in the margins?

Topic: “Inventing Morel” – Urban Space, Media, and Localized Action
Moderator: Ching-Yueh ROAN (Curator and Associate Professor at Yuan Ze University Department of Art Creativity and Development)
Speaker: Jia-Hao WANG (Architecture and Art Critic, Editor and Director of Planning of “BAU Series”)
Discussion Topic:
This lecture is a personal homage to Argentine novelist Adolfo Bioy Casares(1914-1999) on his 100th birthday. The lecture will analyze multi-set concepts explored in Casares’ 1940 novel “The Invention of Morel” such as inclusion and exclusion, Utopia and events, media and space, exhibition and time, desire and practice, etc. With these concepts as starting points, the speaker will share experiences from plans, projects, and research that he has recently participated in, including “Live from Zhang Jiang” city and art exhibition (2006), “Fantasy Island, Floating City – Gulangyu Island” (Urban Space and Cultural Planning, 2010), “Urban Bloom” curatorial project (2012), “Theatre of Propagation” curatorial project (2013), “Planet of Museum” 2014.
The task of the architect today is no longer merely to design a building, but to connect with various actions in society, and to remove oneself from the mirage of the “architectural world.” In other words, to take hold of the “local” in the globalized “location” from the peripatetic perspective of construction, and release a new spatial-temporal organization theme from within the historical vortex of architecture’s conditions of possibility.” -- Jia-Hao Wang, “Construction in Situ”

Topic: Can Government Do Culture? Two Urban Case Studies in Beijing and Hong Kong
Moderator: Sean C.S. HU (Director, HU’s Art Company )
Speaker: Aric CHEN (Curator of Design and Architecture , M+ Museum)
The political emphasis on “cultural development” and “creative industries” in recent years—as a strategy for economic growth, urban regeneration and prestige-building—has posed more questions than answers. Governments have dedicated vast resources and tracts of land to massive cultural projects, especially in Asia, as cities compete to become global centers. But who are these projects for, and whose culture are they advancing? What are the politics driving these efforts, what is their physical and social impact on the city, and what are the local and global perspectives that are informing, benefitting and hindering them?
This talk will examine these issues by looking at two nearly opposite examples, in Beijing and Hong Kong, respectively. The first focuses on Beijing Design Week’s effort to help revitalize Dashilar, the densely-packed historic district abutting Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, while balancing the needs of existing residents with government imperatives and the urgencies of preservation. The second is Hong Kong’s publicly-funded West Kowloon Cultural District, a tabula rasa project that—with more than a dozen planned performing arts venues and M+, a new museum for visual culture—is currently one of the most ambitious cultural projects in the world. Despite their differences and challenges, both potentially offer lessons for how top-down government initiatives might take on more productive, hybridized forms.

Topic: How to Write the Identity of a City?
Moderator: Po-Wei WANG (Curator, Art Critic)
Panelists: Wei-Cheng TU (Artist), Tsan-Cheng WU (Artist), Shang Lin WU (Artist)
Discussion Topic:
In the current post-colonial historical context, the city has been freed from its subordinate role, independent of heritage and nation, to become the most important body in spatial politics and special governance. The re-exploration of a city’s biography, and the relationships between difference spaces and their inhabitants, has become an entire school of thought in our era. This lecture will contemplate how artists can re-draw the textures of a city in pursuit of the puzzling identity of a rich and diverse city.

Topic: Cultural Shifts at the City’s Margins
Moderator: Ma-Li WU (Associate Professor and Director of the Graduate Institute of Interdisciplinary Art at National Kaohsiung Normal University
Panelists: Wei-Li YEH (Artist), Lulu Shur-tzy HOU (Artist)
Discussion Topic:
The growing pervasiveness of photography and the mass migration to cities have virtually developed in tandem. Dramatic shifts in lifestyles, environment, landscape, and the quotidian have occurred according to capitalist developmental logic. Hence technological inventions, changes in the environment, human conditions, intercultural amalgamation, and social relationships, have all become the core focus of documentary photography. Of special concern is the marginalized landscape.
However, from photography to image production, from documentarian to event instigator, how do image workers ultimately approach reality through photography? And with photography serving as topographical, archeological, and social intervention, do shifts in cultural research also explain the relationship between the image creator and contemporary society?
Two image workers have been invited to this session to discuss the image as a method of concern, their differences in approach, and their thoughts on the city, landscape, and image.

Keywords: City, landscape, image (document), reality, topography, archeology, cultural research
